Owners of modern homes are spoilt for choice when it comes to bedroom and closet furniture. There really is an ample range for everybody to choose from. For those who like antique wooden furniture, there are lots of original and reproduction wardrobes, closets and armoires that are now so easy to find on the internet. However, it is in the modern designs that you will see the advances that have been made in closet furniture over recent decades.
The technological and design advances over recent years have been very evident in the evolution of sliding doors. Improved tracking designs have meant that sliding closet doors are smoother and less likely to “jump the track” than a few decades ago. That is, if you buy decent quality sliding doors. It is still possible to find cheap doors that will fall on you after a few weeks, but they are quite easy to avoid when choosing bedroom closet systems, or closet organizer systems for a separate walk-in closet.
You have a number of important decisions to make when buying sliding closet doors. Do you, for example, like the idea of a sliding glass closet door or mirrored sliding closet doors, or would you prefer just to see plain doors? Would you prefer bi-pass doors or bifold? These are two key decisions, which are largely a matter of personal taste, but there are of course others, such as type of wood, length and others.
The mirrored sliding closet door does have décor advantages which the plain wood doors cannot boast. Let’s face it, you do really need a good sized mirror in the bedroom, and full length mirrors are useful for checking your clothing after you have dressed. So, why not have that or those mirrors on the closet door or doors? It does make sense to have sliding mirror doors; there is another advantage, though, and that is the way the mirrors can be quite effective in making a room look larger and brighter.
That is not to say that mirrored and glass doors have it all their own way; after all, wood has been used for centuries in furniture making because it can be very attractive as well as hardy, and that still applies today. Wood composites have increased the options open to modern sliding closet buyers, particularly the high density fiberboard, a welcome evolution from medium density fiberboard.
Plain wood can always be painted, and enhanced with decorative closet sliding door hardware, to make the closet or wardrobe that much more attractive. Wardrobe handles come in many forms and designs, both antique and modern, so even with the minor details you can add a touch of class to your bedroom décor.
Of course, the doors alone do not make the closet; their purpose is to house and organize your clothes, so on this site we also consider easy closets and closet organizer systems and how best to make the most of the storage space behind the doors. The closet shelves and closet rods have their role to play behind the scenes.
